Security has become the watchword for homes
across urban India. Rise in crime rates has prompted the installations
of home surveillance systems, albeit, on a small scale. The reason is
quite obvious. When your doorbell rings, you wonder who is at the door-
especially at any unearthly hour in the afternoon or at night? A
salesman, vegetable vendor or the local plumber are the most likely day
suspects.
Opening the door could be dangerous as
the man who looks like the electrician could be a burglar. Till about
five years ago most residents in buildings relied on the ubiquitous
eyehole on the door or the chain. But the better versions of home
surveillance systems have replaced them successfully in many double
income homes.
Security products available in the market today are quite advanced in
developed countries that have been tackling home grown crimes. Right
from IP-based DVR systems to high-end home surveillance systems and
webcams are effective in monitoring daily routines. These systems are
likely to increase even in India helping nuclear families where
monitoring children is difficult. Maids left with young wards are sometimes
potentially dangerous.
With affordable incomes many homes are
discreetly using security systems in India. It is estimated that the need will
arise in the next three years with nearly Rs. 2000 million being pumped
in an industry, which is a necessity and no longer a luxury.
Home surveillance products in India include the use of the latest technology of
internet, CCTV, digital imaging etc. Each individual works on the degree
of the threat level to enhance the security. People opting for video,
helps in getting real images and curtail the situation even before the
alarm goes off. Any suspicious activity can be taped and the police
intimated. High-risk places like celebrity homes, government residences
etc need high-end surveillance systems. There are hidden and open
systems, which can be installed.
Each type has its merits. If you have an
open camera on the front door, a robber may just abandon the plan rather
than risk being caught. This is worth the price if there are babies in
the house. In some homes in US webcams are referred to as ‘nanny cams’
as they monitor the nannies that baby-sit! India too seems to be ready
for it as well, at least in the metros.
